Guru Maneyo Granth
(English: Granth Be Thy Guru). The Sikh scripture is the eternal Guru of all Sikhs. It imbibes the living spirit of Ten Sikh Gurus. Seen here lovingly decorated for Vesakhi (a historical and religious festival that is celebrated in mid-April of every year).
Hukamnama is a compound of two words: hukam, meaning command or order, and namah, meaning statement. A Hukamnama refers to a hymn from the Guru Granth Sahib which is given as an order to Sikhs. Photo shows a hukumnama being recited.
The singing of divine hymns in the congregation is an important aspect of the Sikh faith. The "hazoori ragis" of Sri Guru Singh Sabha are seen here singing kirtan with the accompaniment of music.
The Langar is the community kitchen in a Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) where a free meal is served to all the visitors, without distinction of religion, caste, gender, economic status or ethnicity. The free meal is always vegetarian.
Besides worship programmes, the Gurdwara organises various activities and events during the course of the year. Here, an Excellence Award is being presented for outstanding performance.
Sikh flag: Traditional symbol of the Khalsa Panth (corps of initiated Sikhs), the Nishan Sahib can be seen from far away, signifying the presence of Khalsa in the neighbourhood. It is taken down every Vesaikhi (mid-April), and replaced with a fresh flag, and the flagpole refurbished (as seen here).
An exhibition of Sikh history was held at Sri Guru Singh Sabha during Vesakhi celebrations in April. Sometimes, historical religious artifacts may also be flown down from India for the congregation to view and pay their respects.
Activities For Kids
Various activities are organised to get the young to participate and enjoy in the Gurdwara environment. Here, kids are busy with a colouring contest.
